February’s Natural Hair Products

Hello Passionistas!!!!!!!

It has been so long since I have blogged. I have been extremely busy and all over the place but that is no excuse. I really have to revisit my weekly schedule to make more room for blogging.

I want to share the hair products I recently purchased. These products have been apart of my go to essentials lately.

Here’s what I purchased:

img_1195I love the OGX Coconut Oil. I have been using this product forever (seems like). I purchased it from Target but you can find it many places like Walmart, drug stores or your local hair store. It’s a lightweight oil spray that hydrates your hair without being to greasy. I wear my natural hair in a wash-n-go style or a flexi rod set. So each morning I need to refresh my curls with some hydration. The bottle is so small that I often take it on the go with me. Just put it in my purse and hydrate as needed during the day. I go through a bottle of this like every other month. Honestly, as much as I use it, I’m surprised it lasts that long.

img_1196I’m not a big fan of Shea Moisture, but I will purchase it and use it from time to time. I was in need of a hair mask and ended up getting the Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage Strengthening Shampoo, Conditioner and Masque. I have used in once and right now I don’t have any complaints. I like it better than the Coconut & Hibiscus line, which I have mentioned in blogs before. The Hibiscus line is for anti-frizz, moisture and shine, that’s what I thought my hair needed but it don’t like how it makes my hair feels. So, I decided to give this Yucca & Plantain Ant-Breakage product a try.

img_1194I also purchased Hask Coconut Oil Hair Mask & Hask Argan Oil Hair Mask. These are also re-purchases. I have come to learn that deep conditioning is a major key to healthy hair. So I like to deep condition every chance I get and these are my cheap but quality mask go to products. I think these little packets are like $1. I could buy the full size product but I like the convenience of the packets; just open, use the product, then throw away.

Girls Love Curls

Hello Passionistas!

Today, I am going to do a post I’ve never done before.

I am going to share with you my natural hair journey, doing a flexi rod set.

I am on a natural hair journey to healthier and stronger hair. My goal is to really enjoy my natural roots. So I am trying to go with excessive heat, braids, sew-ins or anything else that is damaging to the hair. Flexi rod sets and perm rod sets are my favorite natural styles. They look good when its new and fresh, but also when its days old.

img_0502

Here’s is how my hair currently, a week old flexi rod set. It still looks good but I did this style with “dirty” hair, so I am ready to wash it now.

For this style I am using the following products:

img_0503

  • The Mane Choice Growth Stimulating Edge Control
  • JAM- Extra Hold
  • Spray Bottle with warm water and a few drops of oil
  • Lotta Body Setting Lotion
  • Nourishing + coconut milk conditioner
  • Mixed Chicks Shampoo
  • Curls Lavish Curls Moisturizer- Leave in conditioner
  • Curls Goddess Curls botanical gelle
  • TRESemme Thermal Creations- Heat Protection
  • Curls unleashed shea butter and honey curl defining creme
  • Shea Moisture coconut and hibiscus hold and shine Moisture mist
  • A Hard Brush
  • Big tooth comb
  • Hair clips

To start, I am going to wash my hair. I like to wash my hair in the shower. I feel like it give me a good even wash all over my hair. I am going to try to quickly explain my wash routine:

  • First, wet the hair.
  • Second, condition entire head and rinse
  • Third, shampoo roots and rinse,
  • Fourth, use hair mask- let sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse.

If you’d like more details on my wash routine, let me know in the comments are I will do a blog post on the shampoos I use and how I wash my hair.

img_0514

After my hair is all clean, I detangle with my fingers- using the Curls Lavish Curls Moisturizer- Leave in conditioner. Then I section my hair in 4 parts with my hair clips.

img_0518

For this style I am using 4 different sizes of flexi rods. I purchased these at my local hair store for about $6.99 to $9.99 per pack of 6 to 10 rods. I buy new rods all the time, it’s almost like I collect them.. You can never have too many flexi rods.

I start by spraying each section with the TRESemme Thermal Creations- Heat Protection. Also, using the Curls Lavish Curls Moisturizer- Leave in conditioner to finger comb through each section.  I choose one section to start. I prefer to start in the back and work my way to the crown of the head, and then the front.

For each section, I put Lottabody Setting Lotion and Shea Moisture coconut and hibiscus hold and shine Moisture mist on the whole section of hair. Use the hair clips and a big tooth comb to comb through each section and create smaller sections for each flexi rod. Use the JAM- Extra Hold on your roots for sleek results from roots to ends and  Curls Goddess Curls botanical gelle on end to keep them smooth during drying.

To rod the hair, take one straight flexi rod and the end of your hair, roll the hair in a upward motion to wrap around the flexi rod. Remember to go section by section, starting in the back working your way to the front.

The front of your head can be done multiple ways. You can do a side part with your curls, a middle part with curls, or have all the curls in your face or have them all pushed backwards. It’s up to you. For this specific style, I am going a side part with curls away from my face.

For drying, I suggest one of two things- using a hooded hair dryer or letting your hair air dry. Here are some tips for drying.

If you use a hooded dryer- make sure you sure a heat protector when roding the hair, sit under the dryer for 45 mins to 90 mins to get hair completely dry. Once hair is dry, wait 30 mins to allow curls to cool before taking out your rods. If you let it air dry- make sure hair is completely dry from root to ends before taking rods out.

When unwinding rods, work slow and carefully. I like to take all the rods out of my hair before I start pulling the curls apart for a full curly girl look. When pulling curls apart be gentle and use some type of oil on your hairs to help hydrate the curls.

Give this post a “like” if you enjoyed this post and it was helpful. If you decide to try this style, share what products you used and pictures in the comment section PLLLZZZZZZ. And let me know if you want to see more natural hair blogs. I think I might even do a day by day picture blog of how I style my flexi rod set once it gets older.

Until next Post

Natural Hair Products for a Naturalista

Greetings to all my Naturalistas!

So for most of the year, I have been rocking my LM Tresses Hair. But I finally decided it was time to let me curls shine.

I always get questions about what product I use on my hair. Well today I am going to share. I purchased all of these products at Target. That’s where I get most of my hair product- mainly because I am a REDcard holder so I enjoy the 5% off every purchase. Also- I get $3 0ff coupons from the beauty box each month, that I can use on some of these brands/ products.

Mixed Chicks Shampoo

img_9022

This is a first time purchase and use of Mixed Chicks Shampoo. I’ve watched a few natural beauty bloggers review it on there blogs and vlogs. I have washed my hair using this shampoo twice and I like it.

Cantu Shea Butter Dry Co-Wash

img_9021

I use this Dry Co -Wash in between hair wash days. Every night (or every other night) I lightly wet my hair and 2-string twist it for the next day. That process requires using oils and curl creams. So by day four or five they is a lot of product in my hair. This product does a great job absorbing all the excess oil. It leaves my hair looking refreshed and curls looking fresh as wash day.

Curls Blissful Length Hair Growth Oil

img_9023

This is my favorite. I use this every morning when I untwist my hair and every night when I retwist my hair. This is a naturalistas best friend.

Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparative Hair Mask

img_9019

The key to poppin’ curls is a good deep conditioner. This reparative hair mask has been a great product to help recover my “leave-out” areas. After every wash I use this to deep condition my hair for 1 to 3 hours.

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Hold & Shine Moisture Mist

img_9020

This is the only product of this line I actually like. My experience with Shea Moisture product has never worked out in my favor. I find the products to be too heavy or greasy for my hair. But this mist for hold and shine is just right for my daily twist and retwist.

Mixed Chicks Leave in Conditioner and Deep Conditioner

img_9017

I purchased the travel sized of the conditioner because I wanted to see how it made my hair feel after the wash process and how easy it would be to style and hold curls. I only used half of the travel size tube for one wash after washing out the deep conditioner. But I used all of the deep conditioner product- just because. After using both products my curls felt fluffier and looker bigger.

March Empties

Hello Gorgeous,

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to start my weekend. So I thought I’d leave you with some product reviews.

  1. Mint Julips Lip Scrub by Lush

The label says the flavor is mint chocolate, but I only taste the mint. I’ve been using this product for a while. I usually use it on Sunday nights before bed, too make sure my lips stay soft and kissable all week. I definitely recommend this product if you experience dry chapped lips often, and I would re-purchase this product.

  1. Charity Pot by Lush

This was my first time trying this product from lush. This was one on those products I was planning on purchasing but was talked into buying by a salesperson in the store. And I must say its and convenient beauty product. It comes in this little LUSH cup, that I keep on the bathroom sink for in the mornings and during the day. I absolutely recommend this product and I plan on getting another one during my next trip to LUSH.

  1. Oatifix Fresh Face Mask by Lush

Now, this is my favorite LUSH product. It’s a facial that blended with bananas, vanilla and ground almonds with oats. This facial is good for cooling and nourishing irritated skin. And it feels sooooo good on the skin, even washing it off feels amazing. And its only $8. It lasts a minute too. So I definitely recommend this product.

  1. Mary Kay Full-Coverage Foundation (color Bronze 504)

TBH, this was my first foundation ever. I started wearing this foundation back in High School when I was dancing and doing pageants. It matches my skin perfectly- mean like all year around too. Like my skin gets lighter in the winter and browner in the summer and its hard to use the same foundation all year round. But somehow this foundation balances with my skin tone all year round. And the smallest tube takes you a long way. I have this product in a tube but I don’t think they make them in tubes anymore. But I will be getting online to order me some more Full Coverage Foundation soon. I think this is the only Mary Kay product I would recommend to other, but I use it and love it sooo much.

  1. Black Tie Candle from Bath and Body Works

Now, this is my absolute favorite candle scent. It is a seasonal candle so I try to rank up on them so I have some to burn throughout the entire year. But this year, seems like this candle was sold out at every Bath and Body Works I went to. Before the winter season was out I ended up was two of the small trail size candles. Like I burn candles everyday so, of course I burned these two out in no time. So yall know I’m ready for Winter again so I can order my favorite candle.

  1. Cantu for Kids Curling Cream

Although this product is for kids hair, I really like using it on my over night curls. Its suppose to like define and tame fuzziness. So I apply it to my hair when I re- twirl it at night for frizz-less curls in the morning. If you are natural and looking for a really good curling cream for your hair, I would suggest you try this product. It might not work for everyone but it has def. been a savor for my hair.

  1. Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave-in conditioner

Okay, when I purchased this product, I just knew it was going to help grow my hair and restore my damaged curl pattern. UH- NO! It didn’t. All it did was strip my hair even more. Like I was so disappointed in the product. I WILL NOT purchase it again. Don’t get me wrong, I love Shea Moisture product, but I will not be using this particular one any longer.

  1. Rimmel London Concealer (color light/med 335)

So, I used this product for highlighting my under eye area. And it gets the job done. It’s a really cheap concealer as well. I have not re-purchased it yet because I’m trying out some other brands of light concealers, but I would definitely recommend this one as a good drug store make up product. And I will eventually go back to this product.

  1. Cover Girl Lipstick, dulce de leche 225

Not for me at all! I only bought this product because it was marked down at a drug store. I thought it was a cute color. I didn’t really think about how it would look on me. And when I got home and put it on, I was like OH! No! take that off and never put it on again!

Well that’s it for this month’s empties, feel free to share with me some products you have tried lately that you would recommend to a girlie girl like me. Be sure to stop back by on Wednesday for a new post …

Empties and Newbies!!!

Hi Beautiful! So I have some products to share with you. As I was cleaning up I am across a few empty bottles of products that I’ve used. So I decided to hold on to a them to share my reviews of each of them with you. Then I had to also go shopping to re-up on a few products, I’ll share it as well.

February Empties:

  • Mahogany Teakwood scented candle from White Barn/ Bath & Body Works. I love this candle. They normally run for $22.50 but I think I bought this candle during a sale for like buy one get one free or something like that. I burned it all during the holidays. I really like the scent. It has a unique oak smell, that reminds you of something manly and masculine. I wish I would have bought two of them now that I’m out of this one. But I will definitely be re-purchasing it (with or without a coupon or sale).
  • Shea Moisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow and Restore Shampoo w/ Shea Butter & Apple Cider Vinegar. I’m not very picky with shampoos and conditioners. So I purchased this product along with the condition at CVS back in the summer. I think there was a buy one get on free sale going on. This product didn’t really do anything for me. I was hoping that it would help clarify and nourish my curl pattern (My hair is Natural). But I those weren’t the results I got from using it. I will say that my hair was soft after using the shampoo & conditioner. But I saw not change in my curls, which is what I was looking for. So I don’t think I will be re-purchasing this particular product from Shea Moisture, but there are other Shea Moisture products that I do love and will continue to buy.
  • Recently I picked up, the Cantu Shea Butter Intensive Repair deep treatment masque to deep condition my hair. I bought is in a little 175 fl oz packette from target. I think it was like $1.49. I wanted to deep condition my hair really good, Because I’d just taken down my braids and my hair hadn’t been washed or conditioned if a while. So I use this product after my wash. I massaged the product throughout my roots and the the ends of my hair and put on a shower cap. I let is sit for a few hours, as a did a few things around the house. Then I washed all the product out with cold water and patted my hair dry with a cotton t-shirt. This process made my hair feel really good and easy to detangle before styling. I wanted to cater to the ends of my hair a little since I’d had braids for so long- to prevent breakage. And I think it got the job done. I plan on used this product again the next time I deep condition, in about two weeks or so.
  • I love to wear my hair big an curly so I discovered Lotta Body Wrap me Foaming Mousse. I love love love love this product. I use if with I doing my curls wet or dry. I feel like it keeps my curls soft and gives them sooooo much body. And this is a product I just picked up at a wig shop for $4.99. I have already re-purchase a couple a bottles to make sure I don’t run out for a while. I don’t see myself ever doing my curls without using it.
  • I was never big on using a detangler, until my hair started to grow and get really hard to comb out after a wash. So I picked up this small sample sized Olive Oil Leave In Conditioning Detangler. And I really do see a difference when I comb through my hair. This bottle is one 1 fl oz. and has last me since the summer. I will definitely invest in getting a bigger bottle.

February Newbies:

I’m always in the store picking up things I do not need. LOL! But I want to share some of the stuff I’ve recently picked up.

  • I heard a lot about the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer. So now that I do my makeup more often I decided to invest in this product to see what all the hype is about. I like it so far and haven’t had any issues or complaints. I still use my NYX primer from time to time, but for no particular reason. Just whatever is in perfect reach when I’m doing my make-up at the time.
  • The next two products are make up items that I picked up in the makeup store and haven’t even used yet, but I’m excited to start wearing them. The first one is Smashbox Photo Op Eye Brightening mascara. I don’t fake wear eyelashes because I think my eyelashes are thick enough. So I hope this mascara will give my natural eyelashes that eye popping look I need for that dramatic effect. The other item is a lip gloss that just look amazing on my lips. It’s the Bobbi Brown Rich Color Gloss, in the color pink cocoa. I sampled it in the store and was oooooo I like!!!! I love a natural tone lip. So any nudes, coffee, or cocoa color for the lips I will buy.
  • And now that I wear make up more often, I wanted to switch up my facial cleanser. So I bought the L’Oreal Paris go 360 Clean. It has an exfoliating scrubber attached to the bottle, so I though it’ll be great for cleansing my face after removing my make up.
  • I was reading last monthly Essence issue, and saw a ad for Carol’s Daughter. I have always heard people talk about the products but I never tried the product. After reading the Ad, I searched #carolsdaughter on Instagram and twitter and saw how trendy it was for natural hair. I decided to try some of products. Like I said before, I’m not picky about using different shampoo and conditioners. I purchased the Sacred Tiare Shampoo and Condition, as well as the leave –in conditioner. I have love used the combination of all three products once. So I want to use it a few more times before I give it a review.
  • I am challenging myself to keep a lot of heat away from my hair. So I plan on wear my hair curly for a while. And only wash it once every two weeks. So I had to pick up to necessary products. One is the Cantu Shea Butter daily oil moisturizer. Because I want to make sure that I keep my ends moisturized so they don’t get dry, brittle and damaged. And the other is Suave Professional Dry Shampoo with Keratin infusion for a hair refresh in between washes if my hair gets to oily.

Stay tuned for more product reviews. I want to start a monthly tend of empties and newbies. And if you know of any good make-up, skin care, or home goods products I should try comment below. I am slick a product junkie and will buy and try almost anything with cute packaging or natural/ organic benefits.

Until next time stay sweet as pie !!!
