Event| Spa Queen Expo by the Six Figure Spa Chick

Hello Passionista-

Last week, I got a chance to hang with Candace Holyfield also known as the Six Figure Spa Chick and CEO of the largest African-American Spa Booking community. She hosted a 2- Day Spa Expo in Atlanta for Spa Professionals. There were classes that spa professionals could sign up to take with their registration and a vendor expo for spa professional to book clients for services and sell products.

Candace shared with me about how she started in spa industry by doing massage therapy in Memphis, Tennessee after begining a waitress for 12 years. She gained a cliental of celebrities that lead her to creating a online business called, Spa Calls. The purpose of this business venture was for Candace to conduct service calls for spa professional to teach them how to run their own spa and share ways spa professionals could get more clients. By doing spa service calls she created a network and brand called Six Figure Spa Chicks. This network helped her quickly build a team as she transitioned herself, family, and business from Memphis, Tennessee to Altanta, Georgia.

In my conversation with Candace, she shared that building a team for her business was her main objective when becoming serious about branding Six Figure Spa Chicks. Most people (like myself) feel like they have to be a one-person show in the beginning stages of starting a business or building a brand. Candace saw things differently and opted to build her own network that turned her into a Six Figure Chick. By doing so, Candace is now able to retire as a massage therapist to focus mainly on her brand “Six Figure Spa Chicks” and teaching other spa professionals how to build a success spa business.

After my time with Candace, I browsed the expo to see what products and services the vendors were showcasing. I didn;t book any spa services, alothough I could have really used a massage. But I did get them opportunity to talk to lots of female business owners in the spa and beauty community. I was humbled to be able to network and support so many female entreprenurs. Linked below are the vendors that I was able to network with.

DIY Quilting 101 | How to start a simple Quilt

Hello Passionista

So, I was cleaning out my craft closet and found a bunch of  fabric I had from my quilting days. It’s been at least a year since I made a quilt and I think it’s time that I put my sewing skills back to use. I’m excited to start back creating quilts and of course I want to share this experience with y’all. I find quilting to be a very suttle hobby. It’s relaxing and fun to do in your spare time. So I will be instructing you on how to make your own simple quilt.

I sew all of my quilts by hand only using a sewing machine when necessary. Don’t worry if you’re not the world’s best sewer. I taught myself how to sew and quilt. My best advice with this skill is practice makes perfect.

What you will need to start:

  • Basic sewing skills
  • A cutting mat or a hard surface to cut on
  • Rotary Cutter or  Fabric Scissors
  • Marker or fabric pencil
  •  Patchwork shapes or Rotary Rulers
  • Cotton Quilting Fabric (4 to 6 different patterns)
  • Cotton thread
  • Sewing needle

For starters, you want to find or create a quilt pattern. If you are up for the challenge you can free hand draw/ layout your own pattern  or you can find free patterns and measurements on Pinterest. For this project, I created my own pattern (shown in picture below). I used graph paper to sketch out the shapes exactly how I wanted them and mapped out which fabrics to use. I will be using 5 different cotton fabric designs for this quilt.

After you’ve selected a pattern, it’s time to layout your fabrics and start cutting. You want to make sure that you cut all your pieces in the beginning so that you don’t have to stop and cut once you’ve started sewing. For my sketched pattern I labeled each patch with a number to determine which fabric design I will be using.

Pictured in my pattern you can see that each box is labeled with a number 1  through 5. I marked my fabrics 1 through 5. Using the measurements in my pattern, I start with #1 cutting all the different sizes I will need with that fabric design then moved on to #2 and so on until all my fabric is cut. Use a marker or fabrice pencil to trace your lines for cutting. Once you have everything cut, I suggest laying it out on a flat service so you can see how your quilt will look once it’s all put together.

Now that you have all your pieces cut out, start at the top and sew everything together piece by piece according to your pattern. If you are a pro on the sewing machine, you may find it easier and faster to use a sewing machine. But I like to hand sew my pieces together (at least for this part). This may take you some time. So don’t get frustrated. Take you time and sew at your own pace.

The cutting process took me a little over an hour to do. I spent about 2 hours sewing my pieces together in one night and completed the first half of this quilting pattern. In the next blog I will be showing the finished results of sewing all the fabric pieces together for this quilt and how to add a border and the backing to complete a simple quilt.

I hope you are as excited as I am. TELL ME (in the comment section below) how it goes. Have you ever made a quilt before? Or are you just getting started with this new hobby?

Happy Stitching!!!!

SheaBassador| Velvet Skin & Strength + Color Care Purple Rice Water Collection & Review

Hello Passionista-

I’ve finally had the chance to try all of the products in from my 5th SheaBassador box. Y’all should know that I have been using rice water in my hair since December. So, I was exciting about receiving products with purple rice water. Now I want to go to the store and buy some purple rice to make some purple rice water of my own. Honestly, I have not seen any rice water products on the market. This is the first branded product I am trying that has rice water in it.

Velvet Skin & Strength + Color Care Purple Rice Water for sensitive skin & all hair types

The purple rice water collection is enriched with 3 key ingredients

  • Purple Rice Water, which has been used for centuries on Asian Royalty.
  • Wild Orchid is a symbol of beauty around the world.
  • Sweet Violet Extract is an edible flower often used in aromatherapy.

Strength + Color Care Shampoo

This sulfate-free nourishing shampoo helps restore hair to a stronger, healthier state. A blend of Purple Rice Water, Wild Orchid and Sweet Violet Extract removes dulling residue, while restoring shine and vibrancy. Apply to wet hair, gently massage into scalp and hair, working into a rich lather. Rinse thoroughly.

After cleansing my hair twice with this shampoo, I have found it to be very silky and soft cleanser for my kinky curls. I do not have any color in my hair, so there is no concern for dulling residue. I frequently use rice water in my hair during my wash process, this is the first hair care product I have used with rice water in it and I expect amazing results.

Strength + Color Care Conditioner

This nourishing formula locks in moisture and nurtures strands back to health while combating unwanted brassy tones, softening and detangling hair. Apply to clean wet hair. Gently comb through from roots to ends and leave in for up to three minutes.

This conditioner most definitely locks in moisture to promote soft hair. It was easy to finger detangle my hair after cleaning. The only thing I do not like about this product is the packaging. The conditioner is to think for this pump situation. It takes a minute of pumping to get the conditioner to even come out, then after a few pumps the conditioner stops coming out. The formula is thick and does not remove in the bottle.

Velvet Skin Body Lotion

Formulated for sensitive skin, this lightweight creamy moisturizer hydrates and leaves skin silky soft. Smooth lotion all over your skin after a bath or shower.

I do not use lotion often. But I used this lotion after a day of Self Care. I agree that the product leaves your skin feeling silky soft. I do not agree that it is lightweight but it is creamy.

Velvet Skin Rice Scrub

Our scrub gently buffs away dry skin to soften and reveal a new radiance. Apply a small amount to palm, massaging gently into skin using a circular motion, concentrating on rough and dry areas. Leave on for one minute and rinse thoroughly with warm water.

I am in love with this body scrub. It is lightweight but extremely rich. I use it in the shower after shaving or at least twice a week. The scrub is gentle and soft. Honestly, after shaving my legs and using this scrub I felt in heaven.

Velvet Skin Facial Mask

This skin smoothing facial mask gently polishes skin, while an added boost of Papaya Extract leaves skin looking nourished and luminescent. Apply facial mask to clean skin. After 10 minutes rinse off with warm water.

This facial mask formula has a whipped formula appearance. It only takes a little bit of product to complete the job of polishing your skin to be more nourished. I’ve been using this mask once a week and my skin feels amazing after using.

This product line is cruelty free and available for purchase at ULTA.

DIY | Painting Fabric with Chalk Paint

Hello Passionista-

Today is a you’re lucky day… another blog post! That’s 3 in one week. I’m really on a roll. I just couldn’t let this content sit until next week.

So, a few weeks ago I was in Goodwill and saw this pretty chair that I thought would look pretty in pink. I purchased the chair for $15.

Supplies needed:

  • Rust-oleum Chalk Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Sand Paper
  • Spray bottle with water

Step 1: Spray the furniture fabric with water, soaking the fabric really good.

Step 2: Paint the entire piece of furniture, using the paint brush. Let it dry completely for about 24-hours.

Step 3: Use the sand paper to sand the furniture piece. This will soften up the fabric and prevent it from felling crunchy.

Step 4: Paint a 2nd coat. This project will take about 3-4 coats of paint. Be use to let each coat of paint dry completely before starting a new coat. DO NOT spray with water after the 1st coat.

Step 5: Paint or stain the furniture legs any color you’d like.

Step 6: Use a furniture wax to seal the paint.

After 3 coats of Chalk Paint & Wax

This project took 5 days to complete, because I let the paint dry for at least a day before applying another coat. I spent about $42 on the chair, paint, and supplies.

My goals was to put together a cute little sitting /reading area in my small 1 bedroom apartment. I feel really good about what I was able to put together and think it goes really good with the decor of my apartment. Someone once told me, “the way your apartment looks should reflex you as a person”. I’ve been on a journey of decorating my apartment exactly the way I want it and this area is a beautiful addition. It’s cute and chic just like me!

June Creations and DIY Class

Hello Passionista!

I can’t believe June is almost over. This month has been good to me. I hosted my very first DIY class, met some cool people and made some business connections that I am excited about. So, let me show you what I created this month.

Baby showers are my favorite to decorate and make gifts for.

Letters and Onesies made by me…

I’ve been putting my cricut skills to use to make some dope crafts. I made some logo apparel for a client and a new “branded” tee for me. I’ve been thinking about doing some “passionista” merch ….. stay tuned!

Lastly, my DIY class was bomb. I taught a class of about 7 craftors how to make dreamcatchers using a hula hoop, fabric, twine, and ribbon. We had so much fun talking and crafting. Some of the craftors brought wine and snacks, so we shared snacks while we did our craft project. It was honestly amazing and I’m so glad it was a great experience, not just for me but for the guest as well.

Special thanks to Bianca Octavia of the DIYher Workshop for allowing me to host this event at her workshop. She is truly a DIY inspiration. I look forward to collaborating with her on so many more projects.

Which leads me to my next announcement….. I will be hosting another DIY class on July 19th at DIYher Workshop!!!!!!!!!

July Creations | Gifts, Decor &more…

Hello Passionista!

July was a really crafty month. I was graced with the opportunity to make so many gifts and decor pieces for clients and even a few things for myself.

On top of blogging and planning events, I also create custom gifts and decor for special orders. I think most of you know that by now. One thing that I love is working with clients for new and exciting projects. It warms my heart when I make a business connection and the client comes back to me to order more or something new. Recently, I have been working with a client for appeal and gifts for her business brand. These items can be purchased on Experienced Elegance website.

I’m interested and excited to connect with more brands and business to create customized gifts and items for their business. Honestly, I want to start a shop on my blog where I can sell some of the things I make. At first I was thinking about creating a “Passionista” line of lifestyle items. But now, I’m thinking of just creating a shop of nic nats to sell all the random stuff I make and put together. Don’t steal me idea, but tell me what you think? Would you shop with me?

The best part about being crafty is the holidays and birthdays. When my friends or family members birthdays come around I like to share my love by making them something special. Here are a few birthday gifts I made this month.

I’ve recently started learning how to make balloon garlands. I watched a few youtube videos and gave it a try, each time I make one I feel like I learn something new. Pictured, is a assorted pink balloon garland that I made for a bridal shower.

Wash Day| Chasing Curlz First Impression

Hello Passionista!

I finally used the products I received from Chasing Curlz. I’m ready to give you my HONEST opinion on the products and share my twist out results. If you missed last week’s blog… click here then come back to continue reading this post.

So wash day…

As usual I soaked my hair in rice water before shampooing and conditioning. First, I rinsed out the rice water and used the conditioner to condition my hair before shampooing. I used the remaining rice water to rinse out the conditioner to shampoo my hair. Afterwards, I applied the growth drops throughout my hair and used the leave in conditioner to detangle my hair. For the finally step, I used the twisting souffle and insta defining gelle to 2 string twist my hair for the perfect twist out.

Twist Out Results

Frizz with a side of curls. Check out my IG to see this twist out at Day 3.

The Shampoo feels milky. I love the smell and how well it cleansed my hair. The peppermint oil gives the scalp a tingling sensation when washing. I rate this product a 9.

The Conditioner feels more like a yogurt. Not a thick greek yogurt more like Yoplait yogurt. I wish this product was more moisturizing, it contains oils but my hair did not feel as hydrated as I like after washing it out. I had to do a lot of detangling. I rate this product a 7.

The Leave-In Conditioner feels a lot like a styling product. It helps during the process of detangling and twisting. I think the coconut and hibiscus ingredients provides moisture to the hair. I rate this product a 8.

The Hair Growth Serum is amazing. I am interested in continuing to use it to see how much my hair growth will be. I applied the product directly to my scalp all over and massage it in. I rate this product a 10.

The Twisting Souffle and Insta Curlz Defining Gelle are products I used together. I normally don’t use gels in my hair but I wanted to make sure I tried all the products sent to me. I was happy with the results. The curl cream and gel really made my curls look super defined. I rate this combination of the 2 products a 9.

I love that all the products are free of parabens, sulfates, silicones, phthalates and artificial dyes.
